CONFERENCE SKILLS WORKSHOP

On June 19, 2015 Bac Lieu University (BLU) was honored to collaborate with English Language Fellow (ELF) program from US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh city to organize the Conference Skills Workshop. This is phases 2 and 3 in the Action Research project.

The workshop was under the guideline and training of Ms. Anne Caroline Nabors - an ELF teaching at HCMC University of Education, Ms. Catherine Bolster - an ELF teaching at BLU and Mr. Abdul Rahim - an ELF teaching at BLU. Also attending at the workshop were teachers from BLU and Medical college who were selected and appointed as Mentors and AR participants at the initial colloquium.

At the workshop, the experts introduced the Action Research project.  Action Research is a continuous learning process of action, evaluation and critical reflection and changes in practical teaching methodology. The process consists of a number of phases: planning, action, observation and reflection. The experts emphasized that it was vital and essential to implement a research, innovate and enhance the teaching methodology in practical training and learning. It is widely recognized worldwide that Action Research creates knowledge based on enquiries conducted within specific and often practical contexts.

The experts shared some effective methods of public speaking, techniques of arranging power point slides and presentation settings, which stimulated the audience’s attention and understanding. The teachers, then, practiced making short presentations in groups under the experts’ support and evaluation.

At the end of the workshop, some mini-games were made to review such as: the ways to put information on the slides effectively, the ways to use colors, fonts, illustrations and charts into presentations scientifically,...

After the training, the teachers were very excited to acquire more useful skills and practical support to the process of teaching and research. It is hopeful that there will be more workshops in coming time to meet the school’s demand of improving and innovating methods of teaching and scientific research among teachers.
